3x 1440p Monitor setup - will a 980 TI do it? (9440 x 1440)

Hi all,

I'm currently building my gaming rig - my monitors will be as followed:

Central Gaming monitor: Acer Predator xb270hu 27inch (2560 x 1440)
Side Monitors (2): AOC U3477PQU 34inch Ultra Wide (3440 x 1440)

This brings my total resolution to: 9440 x 1440.

Now, ideally I was only looking to get a 980TI as I don't plan on using all 3 screens to to run a game, just simply the middle screen on 144hz with Gsync.

Will a 980TI be able to handle high frame rates on the middle screen while running desktops on each outerscreen fine? And, will the middle monitor be able to run Gsync with the outer monitors not 144hz or gsync enabled? Lastly - can a 980TI even run 3 monitors solo? I remember back when I built my last triple monitor setup with AMD 5850's x2 there was an issue with Digital vs Analogue so one monitor had to be VGA.

Any help would be great appreciated.

Running multiple screens and gaming on one won't cause any performance issues (I have 2 screens and a TV hooked up to my R9 280 and game on the main screen only).

As for display support, nVidia these days support up to 4 displays. AMD you have the option to go as high as 6 via a display port MST hub. Either way shouldn't be an issue.

The only thing I'm not sure on is if G-sync works with one display whilst others aren't?

The other thing I'd say is that for 1440p your best value option right now is the new AMD 'Fury' graphics card, although I guess that's not an option if you've already got a g-sync screen.

Thanks for your reply, that's really handy to know. I don't have any of the screens purchased yet so the Fury is still an option, the FreeSync Monitor is the same price has the G-Sync as well. My only concern is AMD vs Nvidia.

I guess the only thing I'd need to know before I splash out the cash is will G-sync / Freesync work on 1 out of the 3 monitors.

Thanks again for your help, really appreciate it.

Glad I could help, yeah it will be interesting to know how g-sync / freesync handle multiple screens. As for the AMD vs Nvidia issue- I've personally not had any trouble with my R9 280 (I came from a GTX 560 before, which was also fine). I think the issues get blown out of proportion and are also generally related to more exotic set ups (e.g. SLI / Crossfire) as those require special driver tweaks to keep them running smoothly.

Where a single card is concerned you should be fine (although on AMD cards you'll probably have to disable or fiddle with nVidia games-works options- for example the hair rendering in the Witcher 3 was an issue for AMD cards, however all it actually needed to cure the problem was to change the max tessellation level in the catalyst drivers to sort it out).
