Had a lightning strike take out a desktop though my cable lines (it fried my wireless router on the cable input and on the connection this PC was using as well as knocking out the MOBO. Have since added surge protection and hoping for best luck next time but now need a new MOBO which means I may as well get a new Processor as well.

The machine is used for gaming, game development and debugging and as a test server. I've tried development on a mobile i5 and found it a little lacking so I'm not sure if I can get away with a desktop i5 or should look at an i7? I kind of want a minimum of 3 hard drives and 3 DVD drives but with steam and growing HD sizes I'm not sure this is as great a priority (at least two drives for an SSD/HD setup).

I do have a good quantity of DDR3 memory, not sure if I need to upgrade to DDR4 right now?

Any input would be great!

That link is to a part list. If you want to overclock, change the processor to an i5 4690k or i7 4790k. If you want an i7, change the processor to an i7 4790k or i7 4790.

I gave 3 hard drives. If you want to cut cost, eliminate one of them and / or change the ssd to the 120gb version.

Also, 3 dvd drives is kind of excessive, but they're...

Right, always fix important items. I'm willing to run up to 1k in price but I'd rather avoid paying the new technology tax. So I'm kind of shooting for a good balance between price and performance with an edge toward performance.

Multi threading yes but a quad core should cover my needs. I have played with heavy multi threading but that is more a side hobby.

If you want to improve cooling performance, that case has room for extra fans and liquid cooling.

Also, the i5 on laptops is dual core hyperthreaded, like a desktop i3. Desktop i5 is way more powerful.
