Do you have to use alcohol to wipe off the thermal paste or would a clean soft cloth work aswell ?

Alcohol is the best, as its a solvent that evaporates without residue. You can go without it, but there will still be thermal paste left on the processor.
Also if you do decide to go with a cloth, make sure it wont leave any lint behind. I personally recommend coffee filters, as they leave no lint.
