Just finished putting this budget build together around the amd 7300 dual core apu. I use speedfan for hardware monitoring and I noticed recently that shortly after logging in and simply idling at the desktop cpu usage goes up to 100% and stays there. No programs running besides some windows stuff, it's a fresh install of windows 7. Asus A55BM-e mobo, 2x2 gb g.skill memory, evga 8800gt gpu. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure the above video will help you unless a specific utility is taking up all the CPU poer. Check in the Task Manager - Control/Shift/Escape is the safest way to get there - and click the Processes tab and click to put a tick in the box on the bottom left to Show Processes from all Users.

Then, double click on the heading CPU to bring the highest users to the top of the list.

Post back which is using the most.

I checked the processes tab yesterday when the cpu was at 100% usage and like I said, there were no programs running that should use that much. The only one I had running outside windows core processes was speedfan. Today it only did it for about 10 seconds. Once I launched my steam app cpu usage went down to normal. By the way thanks for the replies, I appreciate it. Hopefully the problem doesn't come back.
EDIT: windows has been doing updates fairly regularly from fresh install, not sure if that might be the cause.
