Going to get a single card for my pc build and later upgrade it to a crossfire or sli set up. I would prefer the r390 as a single card but would like to know which card would yield better performance in either sli or crossfire

Hello Anikash Prarudh,

I suggest you get the R9 390, crossfire them in future to get the best performance. The overclocked R9 390s would be far better than the GTX 970. Will also handle all hardware intensive games better like the GTA V, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Far Cry 4, Assassin's Creed Unity etc with ease.

Update:

What comes with MSI R9 390 is no ordinary cooling. It has the Twin Frozr V cooling tech, one of the best cooling solutions in the industry, which is more than enough. Even the person in the above video discusses about how well the cooling tech is implemented and performs in the MSI R9 390.

You need a 1000W PSU for R9 390 Crossfire. Get something like this Corsair RM Series RM1000 1000W or Seasonic SS-1050XM2 or Cooler Master V Series 1000W Power Supply (RSA00-AFBAG1-UK)

Cheers!

I have 2 r9 390's MSI
1st card running 100% got to 100 degrees
2nd card 100% about 80
I have a sealed case with 7 fans intake exhaust with 2 blowing right on the 2 cards
these things get hot but if u vsync lock at 60 fps they run great because right now unless your running 4k these cards dont need to be running at 100%

im asking myself the same question for my i5 skylake build (for oculus and 1080p gaming) i think i will go for 2x r9 390x in the long therm, but 100degree is kinda hot even for a GPU no? ive heard only one 390 can go pretty hot in your PC case... or maybe just wait another month and get the 980ti...

I love my SLI 970 setup for 1440p. I originally had one 970 on a 1080p monitor and 980Ti wasn't available yet when I bought my first 970. I am able to play all of my games at 1440p and 60 FPS with some settings tweaks. I'm very happy with the performance I get.

That being said I think Crossfire 390's would make more sense. The performance between a 970 and 390 is in the same ballpark but the 390's 8GB of VRAM means that you won't have to worry about VRAM limitations in the cards' useful lifetime.

With one 390 I think the 8GB is a marketing gimmick more than anything because the processing power of the card will likely be maxed out before it can use all 8GB. With two 390's in Crossfire you are significantly increasing that processing power though and it should come much closer to being able to use all 8GB.

Twin 390's should be a great setup for people considering 4K gaming.

in raw power yes the r9 390 is better without question , however cause of damm drivers in games the gtx 970 sli win most of the time , cause of bad support from games to the crossfire side.
ps : U Dont need 1000w psu for r9 390 crossfire!!! (3way 4 way maybe)
