How much does triple monitor gaming hinder performance

So im planning to get a single 2560x1440 monitor and have it run on a gtx 970 (at 1440p, 60fps) but recently I watched a video about triple monitor gaming and it looks awwwwwsOME! How much will performance hinder on the gtx 970 if i decided to attach to more monitors and play with all at once and will i need to upgrade to a gtx 980/980 ti or even go SLI to maintain high settings at that resolution.

Three monitors means 3 times as many pixels, so it will require nearly 3 times as much GPU power. For 3 2560x1440 monitors a 970 won't be enough in most games, a 980ti would be your best bet and even that won't get you 60fps on ultra settings.
