Why don't programs/games start up faster the first time?

I'm asking because my games will only start fast after the first time I run it, on the first time they'll take an age(comparatively) to start up.

Is this normal? Why does it happen? Is there a way to correct it?

Perfectly normal, if it's the first time launching it the game doesn't have any cached files etc. don't worry about it
