How do I know if my motherboard needs a low profile video card?

Solution
The motherboard doesn't determine if you need a low profile card or not, the case does!

Small compact cases often don't have room for a full sized card. If your machine is built an a standard mid tower case you should be fine.

Also PCIe 2.0 x 16 should run any graphics card out there- the thing that limits you is your power supply. Different cards have different power requirements, and mid to high end boards require special direct connectors from your PSU.

If your unsure about this, one of the safest options is the Geforce GTX 750 as that is the fastest card you can buy that runs only off the power from the PCIe slot on the motherboard.

Okay that was very detailed and very informative thank you. however I went to install my.graphics card from my.old pc and it was too long and wouldn't fit into the slot properly. so the fact that the graphics card says 3.0 means it's fine because I was looking at the GeForce gtx 750ti

What was your old graphics card?

In that case I think you'll be fine with the 750ti as it fits the same slot :) Just double check the specs of the specific card you get to make sure it doesn't need any extra power connectors.

PCIe vs 1, 2 and 3 are all compatible. The main thing you need is PCIe x 16 (ver 1, 2 or 3 all will work).

Running a gen 3 card in a gen 2 slot will slow it down slightly, but were talking a really small difference.
