Specs im choosing:-
Asus Extreme x99
I7-5820k
1000w corsair pcu (for upgrading to dual graphics cards once current one starts tiring)
16GB g.skill ripjaw ram
120 kingston SSD
1TB HDD
Corsair 100i cooler (again for overclocking once cpu starts to tire)
R9 290x 4gb graphics

Self built this will cost me 1.5k (studying computer sciences at uni so need the build experience)

Anything you guys would swp out/change improve..

thanks

It's kind of how much you're underestimating how good a current system runs vs a high end...
1.5k USD?

Are you willing to save money for unnoticeable performance loss?

(And from what i've seen, computer sciences degree holders never actually learn anything about actual computer hardware -_-)

I don't see a good monitor in there, are you going to do lots of video editing?

Sorry. 1.5k gbp.
The course I am doing is a hnd with hardware and networking modules that converts into a bsc with 1 year top up.

I have a 4k hp monitor from my old desktop. And orion spark keyboard and naga mouse so set up for that side of things.

The 99x doesn't have that good of an upgrade life. You'd be better waiting for the z170s and intel skylake cpus that were shown off recently.

The x99 is just a waste of money really.

You can spend probably only 1k and get an insanely good system, it won't age as fast as what you're used to. (low end systems)

hi james. thanks for that. so am i to understand that 99x motherboards are just going to be for the broadwell-E processors?
If thats the case then yes its absolutely pointless me going for that set up!
My current system was mid range about 3 years ago and is now occasionally struggling with WOW especially graphics card wise. cost £500 but is prebuilt so would be a PAIN, if not impossible) to upgrade.

I think the main question i need to ask from your response is:- how long are the 99x motherboards going to be supported cpu socketwise for?
if 3/4 years then i can get decent life of about 6-8 years from the system before a major overhaul.

as we speak... just googling. no it looks like the skylakes are being produced now and the 1151 sockets are due to be launched q3/q4 of 2015.
for the fast ram its up to the motherboard makers to decide. Surely this will MAKE a huge premium on the ddr4 boards.
sorry if im hung up on ddr4. granted right now there is not a great performance boost between ddr3 and ddr4 as the programs dont know how to use it but with the course im due to do LOTS of programming.
The faster i can process the app/game/program the better. Ill be using C# so hopefully microsoft will be early adopters of using ddr4.. like when hyperthreading first came out.

It's kind of how much you're underestimating how good a current system runs vs a high end. basically anything over 700 GBP is where performance for cost goes out the window, This 700 GBP system would still be a huge boost to what you're used to.

It's not a bad idea to wait till august/september though for the skylake cpus and motherboards either.

And if you go with a modest setup like a 700, you're saving 800 that you can set aside for 2-3 years to get another 700-800 system that uses the new cool stuff.

There's no such thing as future proof, it's better to spend wisely and get what's the right mix of cost for performance now and than be able to do it again in a shorter span of time.

thanks jason. yeah that makes a lot of sense! Thanks for your help on this. ill leave the DDR4. The point you make about getting a new system in 4 years time is a good one. so basically 2 system that are up to date at the time for the same cost of a HUGE system that may or may not be up-gradable and could cost 2k- 2.5k over its lifespan rather than the two £900 systems.

Plus the bonus is that i get to build two systems :)

thanks a million anyway.

And your old one won't be so bad you can't give it to a girlfriend or your parent's or just as an extra system for hosting a server/browsing the web/taking the load off your main PC to stream game footage, ect.
