Constant artefacts with Radeon HD 5850 on HP Envy 17, running Windows 7 64-bit

I am constantly getting artefacts like those in the screenshot below, in all areas of my screen. They flicker in and out, change position, and occasionally color. I have tried different versions of the driver, both from the HP and AMD websites. Any hints about what I should do next? Thanks.

The card is in a laptop, and I've read that laptop video cards are extremely difficult to swap out.

it's usually impossible without a motherboard change since they are connected to the motherboard. You can test things with an external monitor and see if that works better, but issue with that is that it may end up running on the onboard CPU video not the Radeon one. Connect monitor, external keyboard and mouse, turn on the laptop and close it right after that, it should see the monitor as the only display, see how it runs.

It ran perfectly, no artefacts at all, through the external monitor. What is my next step in fixing it so I can use the laptop monitor without the problems?

One thing that may also be happening is that someone in another post did testing and found that some outputs use the onboard video, while the laptop screen uses the faster discrete video card. I'd check the monitor cables, if those don't fix things check with HP support or a computer shop. I am not totally sure if you will need a new screen or a new motherboard, depends on how that laptop works with external outputs.

The laptop worked great with the external outputs, and even on the laptop screen itself, for two reboots. But now the artefacts are back on the laptop screen. Is there anything else I can try?

Nothing to try without swapping hard ware. You can try a clean Windows setup with new drivers, although issues like this are very likely hardware and not software.
