Can I put an old drive into a new computer build?

I'm currently in the process of building a PC and I've looked up numerous threads with many different opinions and options and I just want a clear answer for the question I'm asking: Is it possible to format my old hard drive on my new PC upon completion and use that Hard drive in the new PC? OS is installed on the HDD and I've heard of problems when putting that into a new PC. All I want is the hard drive. I can buy an OS and install it on the SSD. Soooo can I make this work by formatting everything on the old hard drive? (by the way, I'm obviously new to PC building)

It's not a super old HDD, it's actually a pretty good 2TB Seagate. It came out of a year and a half old HP PC. As long as it lasts maybe a month or two I'll be ok. I just needed to know if I could format from the newly built PC.

I'm using drives that are 5+ years old that have had OS's on them (granted not as my OS boot disk now but) you'll get through those 2 months easy. Just backup any important data to DVD's and/or Google Drive or cloud service.

Keep this in mind for the future: Back up your files, defragment your drive once a month and keep an eye on the drive. If you hear it making strange noises or start getting error messages abandon and replace.
