This is for all of you networking junkies. Let me start by saying that i have a very basic understanding of the world of networking. Which leads me to my question that i need help with.

Scenario: My current internet situation is Comcasts fastest residential internet that they provide (fios is not available in my area). i have a dual band router that feeds my 4000 sq ft home with wifi and does a pretty dang good job getting MOST areas that i need it in. In the near future i will be turning my detached barn, which seats about 60 ft away from my house. How do i go about getting my current internet over to it and to provide wifi and hard wired options? The cave will have gaming consoles in it as well as a PC and smart tv' s that will need internet access. Im not worried about cost in your responses because this is a project that ill be saving and doing as i go. Thanks in advance for your help!

Here is your options from best to good:

1 (Real world max speed of 1000 mbps) Run Ethernet from router (likely through attic or crawl space) and then have buried cable to detached barn, then setup a second router as an access point (see further down)

2 (Real world max speed 250-350 mbps) If the barn is connected on the same power circuit as the house you can use a powerline adapter to send the data over your power lines. Since doing multiple deviecs with video streaming I would get the higher end AV600 and make sure it has gigabit port. You will then need to connect it to an access point in the garage.

An access point is an extension of your network that provides additional wireless and wired ports but allows your main router to do all of the processing.
You can turn any off-the shelf router into an access point by setting its ip address, setting the gateway address to the address of your main router, disabling dhcp, disabling NAT and SPI firewall (may not have this setting depending on model), and then instead of pluging the input line into the WAN port you plug it into a LAN port.

If you want to give the rest of your house WiFI then I would suggest you get another router to make it into an access point as well. Ideally you should have 1 router on one story at about the 1/4 - 1/3 point of the house, and then the other router on the other story at the 2/3-3/4 point and that should cover your house in wifi.
Connecting the routers via Ethernet is highly preferred but using a powerline adapter would be the next best method.
