Here is the scenario:
I have a main modem/router (192.168.154.254) to which my internet comes in to. It's assigning ips xx.xx.154.17-45 To it I connected another gigabit router (192.168.2.1) for all my devices, xx.xx.2.1-100. So I have my own private network without bothering the main router. So I need to open a port for a device that is on my private network for ftp or remote connection. What do I do?

Solution
You have to open ports on both routers if the device is behind router 2.

If everything is connected to the 2nd router then you should disable NAT or put the modem/router in modem only/bridge only mode (all these are the same thing, they are just called differently). Doing this will essentially strip the router functionality of the modem/router so it will be a modem only. Having it run through 2 routers creates more latency and your purchased router likely has better cpu/memory/firmware to handle all the routing over your modem/router.
