First post on here so sorry if I am in the wrong area. So decided my PC needs a few changes, so thought why not build a new one. This will be my first time building from scratch, I usually just upgrade so if I've got something silly in here I apologize! This is primarily be used for gaming.

Anyway, so far I've listed these parts and I would love to here opinions on it or any recommendations (roughly same price as listed item). I'll be buying this in parts within the coming months and then build it once everything is here.

CASE: NZXT H440 - £90
MOTHERBOARD: MSI 970 Gaming AMD AM3 - £80
PSU: Corsair RM 850W - £119
PROCESSOR: AMD FX8350 Black Edition 8 Core 4.0/4.2GHz - £136
CPU FAN: Cooler Master V8 GTS - £60
GRAPHICS: AMD Radeon R9 390 - £270
RAM: Corsair 8GB 1600Mhz (x2 16GB) - £80
HARD DRIVE: Crucial BX100 250GB SSD - £70
BACKUP DRIVE: WD 1 TB Black - £60

Any advice on this? Any help and opinion is much appreciated!

Not a bad build at all, except for the psu. The Corsair RM 750/850 are not good psus. They have good output and really good ripple, but have really bad thermal properties and do not like to come anywhere close to full load without shutting down. There are much better psus for less.

Thank you Karadjgne, the PSU was really what I had most trouble deciding on as I really don't know much about them. I just read some reviews (quickly) and chose a recognized brand. I guess I'll be changing this then and have a look at these links. Thanks a tonne!

You can actually save a bit of money by going with intel. Don't get 2 seperate ram sticks, it's possible they won't work together and you'll have to return them anyways. The PSU is meh. don't need to spend the extra money on a WD black either, the blue is just as good.

This will be much much better:

As made by OP. In £, but for some reason doesn't include ram price, so would be £944.

Much better mobo, especially for OC, lower profile ram, better cooler clearance issue, much better psu, that still allows for AMD OC. And is cheaper.

I would personally stick with an XFX or Seasonic power supply!

Thanks for the help! I'll probably end up with one of these then, will be having a good look today. Is there a huge difference between the MSI 970 motherboard and the one you linked in your last post? Although I'm trying to get decent performance I was also trying to keep the black and red theme throughout. If there is a difference then I'll probably go for that one too then, thanks again.

The MSI board has a 970 chipset. While this is acceptable for running a 125w FX 8 core cpu, it wasn't designed for those cpus, it was designed for the 95w FX Cpus, but is built strong enough to handle the wattage increase with a bios upgrade. The 990FX boards were designed specifically for the fx Cpus like the 8350, and designed to be able to handle the wattage used in 5.0 or better overclock.

Basically, with a 970, you are putting basketball sneakers on an Olympic sprinter. It'll work, but not as good as it could.

This would have been my other choice for black/red and according to MSI, mobo + gpu both are optimized for maximum performance when matched up. Gigabyte makes an excellent AMD board, and it is cheaper. Both have benefits and drawbacks, the MSI is a little stronger performer, looks cooler, has stuff the Gigabyte board doesn't, the Gigabyte bios is easier, its a known good performer and cheaper.

Now it's personal preference.
