hi i have about a 40 MB download speed and 5 upload. even when i am gettings these speeds on speedtest.net whenever i actually download stuff on my console or pc i get AWFUL speeds. im talking about speeds like .1 MBPS absolutly awful. why am i getting these terrible downloading results when it says my speed is at 40 MPBS? also when i try to download i dont use anything else on my network and it is still terrible. please help. my isp is att uverse

Solution

that's because no ISP throttles speedtest.net

here, try this website. https://www.battleforthenet.com/internethealthtest/

that website will tell you if you're being throttled by your ISP or not. basically all 5 tests it runs should return roughly the same download and upload speeds. if certain tests report wildly different results then you are 100% being throttled by your ISP, and either should get a new one (if one is available), file a complaint with the FCC (net neutrality and all that jazz) OR just...

Reported download speed depends on many things.
Where you are downloading from. What software. How that software reports the 'speed'.

If speedtest.net is giving you what should be happening, then the issue is where you are downloading from.

what's probably happening is itunes is being throttled by your isp. what your isp is likely doing is throttling "port" traffic for known bandwidth hogs, they do the same thing to torrent programs and netflix.

Network 'speed' performance depends on the slowest device in the chain.
If everything else is delivering at what you think you should be getting, but this one thing isn't....then either it is the server you are getting it from, or something in the middle is throttling that particular file, protocol, or location.

A download's only going to go at the speed of the slowest device in the chain. So if somewhere in the chain a device is throttled to .1Mbps, then your download is only going to go that fast.

If this is affecting everything, contact your ISP. They have either over-provisioned your area, or they're throttling you for some reason.

Speedtest is good for checking your available bandwidth, but it connects to servers hosted in datacenters that give them hefty connections to give them massive bandwidth so they're never a choke-point.

First, what is telling you 'slow'?
Speedtest and you ISP report in megabits per sec, most applications report in megabytes per sec. Approx a 8:1 ratio.

So 40 Megabits per sec would show to be 5 megabytes per sec in almost any application.

Now...you are apparently getting much less than that.
Is this a wired or wireless connection?

basically all that i know is when i go to speedtest.net and test my internet speed it says- Download Speed: 40 Mbps and Upload Speed: 5 Mbps, my connection is wired. and i am getting speeds no where close to these results

that's because no ISP throttles speedtest.net

looks like you're being throttled to me. with a range of 33mbs to 1.8mbs that's either a horrible internet connection l(ISP problem) or you're being throttled (also ISP problem) try the test again, if you get the same results then it's the ISP throttling you, if you get wildly different but just as widely separated results it's probably just horrible lines giving you poor connection to the isp, which is something i'd complain about loudly.

real simple, you have extremely inconsistent network connectivity. with huge latency spikes and drastic swings in download/upload speeds which makes using the net for even basic websurfing almost impossible. Make it clear you're extremely upset with thier level of service and that you find your cell phone's 4g connection to be better most of the time, and you're considering cutting service and going 4g with your unlimited data package from your cell provider

that should make them RUN over to your place to fix your network.

Speedtest.net by default displays speed in Mbps. thats megabits per second.

I always found that downloads displays it in MBps, which is megabytes per second.

One megabyte or MB is 8 megabits or Mb.

But 40 megabits should be 5 megabytes... i think?

Maybe im just dumb and you shouldn't listen to me :p
