I have a Dell Optiplex 760 (64 bit) system with Windows 7 Professional. I bought this used and it is in a tower - not one of the configurations normally listed.

We had a power outage while I was using it and it failed to switch to the APC 650 watt battery backup I had it plugged into and it just went off. I later plugged another computer into the APC and pulled the AC power and it switched to the backup OK. I tried the same experiment with the 760 and it again failed to switch to the battery backup. I was just wondering if anyone might have an idea what's going on and how I can hook it up so that I have battery protection.

Someone said that maybe the backup doesn't switch fast enough. there is another type of backup a "floating" type that does not switch but powers everything off the battery.

Solution
The second computer may have had different power requirements and may have been less sensitive than the Dell. The fact that the Dell doesn't survive a power out indicates a problem with the UPS.

UPS batteries are generally reckoned to be good for about 3 years, so they may be getting a little tired. You could always contact APC and ask them what they think the problem may be.

I tested the UPS with another computer plugged into it and then pulled the AC plug to the UPS and that computer still ran. The UPS is about 2-4 years old (APC).

According to APC support you are close to the solution. They say that the computer has an active PCF (power correction factor) power supply and it only will work with a battery backup that outputs a smooth sine wave not a stepped approximation. So I can either buy a "smart" UPS or I'm thinking replace the power supply in the computer.

Thank you for your help.
