Can't load OS

Hi all, been reading this forum for help a lot, but now I have a problem I couldn't solve from other users's questions.

Basically, a while ago I got a used old motherboard on ebay and now I'm trying to fix an equally old pc. The mobo is an Asus P7P55D Pro, I know is old and is probably cheaper overall to just build a new pc but I'm also trying to learn as much as possible.

So, I put in an i5 750 (also got on ebay) and a couple sticks of ram I got laying around, put my graphics card and my main hard drive with windows 7 and another with linux.
Now, I got after POST, went into the boot menù and gave a good look around, but whenever I try to load an operating system it gets stuck on whatever loading screen it has, be it the black screen before windows or the black screen with blinking underscore before linux.
I also tried to use a live linux mint version from usb stick, but it still gets stuck before loading the system.

Any idea or tips on how to troubleshoot the problem? Does the motherboard work or is it probably broken to the point I can't use it?

I have to add, since I don't have a compatible cpu heatsink at the moment I just placed one on the cpu without screwing it in (but I still applied thermal paste, and every time I get back to the bios the cpu temp is no more than 45-46 °C).

Any help would be really appreciated :)

Edit: I amost forgot! I'm using my old power supply that doesn't have an EPS connector, so I just plug in the usual 4 pin cpu and the 24 pin, leaving the other 4 pin without connection. I understand it's not the best working situation but I just need to be sure everything works before buying a new reliable psu.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think you need to make a new clean installation of Win OS for your hardware to work properly. Haven't used Linux so sorry I cant help more. However I have similar hardware and using only one 4-pin works.

Thanks for the answer, however I don't seem to be able even to get to the installation menù, it just freezes earlier.
