Hello once again Tom’s!
I do apologies for the amount of threads I have been making of late, I have been having a real hard time finding total system stability and my previous threads have stopped receiving replies so I have been making follow up threads, often covering a new issue as I have been moaned at by Moderators for Bumping in the past. This thread is a culmination of the issues I have been having and will hopefully lead to a final resolution!

---------------------------

Intel i7-4790K
ASUS Z97-A
2x8GB Kingston Hyper-X Beast (2133MHz XMP)

1. I cannot get Adaptive Voltage to work correctly, it supplies much more than the Maximum Turbo Voltage I have set in the BIOS when under load. (Not referring to Prime95 or AIDA64)

2. If I can’t get Adaptive Voltage to work correctly, how detrimental is a Manual (Static) Voltage to CPU health?

3. When using Manual Voltage (I haven’t looked at Adaptive) for Cache, HWMonitor and other such programs show a 0.03V increase in the value set within the BIOS, this is not present for Core Voltage.

4. My current CPU Overclock is 4.5/4.2 (Core/Cache) tested to be stable with OCCT, RealBench, 3DMark and Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, are these values safe for everyday usage? I manually set VCORE, VID and LLC/Ring.

5. A user on a previous thread stated that 1.3V was considered the maximum safe Core Voltage, which I knew, but also stated that 1.2V was the maximum for Cache Voltage. Is this true, because I couldn’t find any stability at voltages that low?

6. My system is currently stable with “Auto” vales for DRAM in the BIOS (1600MHz) but I have been unable to find any stability using either XMP Profile (1600MHz and 2133MHz)
Could anyone advise what needs to be done to find stability here?

---------------------------

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide and hopefully soon I can start helping some of you for a change!

1) I would never use adaptive voltage, I have no experience with it but it sounds awful just go manual in my opinion.

2) Well I have had my fx 6350 at 4.7ghz overvolted to 1.44v for the past 3 years and it still runs as good as the day I bought it. As long as you keep it cool the cpu will probably last well into your next upgrade no matter what voltage it is at, just keep it cool.

3) You probably only need to overvolt the cpu I wouldn't touch the voltages of anything else unless your trying to go much higher than 4.5ghz. 0.03v volt fluctuation is probably fine.

4) Do you overclock with turbo mode on? Maybe im just old school but i would never do that. Yes of course 4.5ghz is fine for everyday use, as long as your load temps are good if they are I would probably try to go higher.

5) I have heard 1.35v for that cpu. If you have to go higher than that to get past 4.5ghz I wouldn't you probably just didn't do too well in the silicon lottery.

6) What voltage does xmp set for the 2133mhz option?

Thanks for your response Dunlop!

In regards to Question 4, I actually included an imgur of my HWMonitor readings following an Intel Extreme Tuning Utility Stress Test, I just want to ensure everything is as it should be and not dangerously high.

The XMP Profile sets the Voltage to 1.6V and also adjust the timings and what have you. I am totally unexperienced with DRAM Overclocking so I have know idea what any of the values, other than Voltage, do.

Oh yeah sorry I guess i looked at the min temps I thought you were at idle there, been a while since i have used hwmonitor. Yah those temps are pretty good for a stress test, they will probably be a bit lower while gaming or editing or whatever you do with this pc.

1.6v sounds right. How about timing and CAS latency? It should be cas latency: 11. Timing: 11-12-12 . If you can take a screenshot of the DRAM Timing page of your bios i can help you set that manually if for some reason xmp is messing it up.

Thanks again Dunlop,
Here is am image of the DRAM Timing Control (http://imgur.com/48z8QB4) I didn't know how to Screenshot within the BIOS =D

All the values look correct to me, going by what you said and the Kingston website at least.
That being said, the RAM has passed a MemTest86 test and works fine on "Auto" values so I don't think it is faulty. I might try a HCI MemTest run tonight if we can't figure it out.

I honestly don't know why XMP wouldn't work. And your manual setting look correct so im not sure what the issue is. Maybe 2133mhz is too much for some reason. Have you tried 1866mhz? Did it boot then?

Thanks again Dunlop.
There is no 1866MHz Profile, only 1600MHz and 2133MHz.

Booth boot, and would pass a 3DMark FireStrike test but the system crashes under any other Stress Test I have run, OCCT, RealBench and Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to name a few.

No problem.

You should be able to manually set it to 1866mhz. Does it pass memtest at 2133mhz? If thats the case I would redo your overclock.

You seem to know what your doing so I dont want to insult you by telling you to follow this beginners video, but this is an overclock I know can work on your board so I would advise you to follow this video closely because he got 4.8ghz on his 4790k at 1.3v.

Not an insult mate, trust me, I am far from experienced =P

I'll run a MemTest tonight and see if anything presents itself.
I do recall it passing an overnight run when I first encountered this issue. Do you have a recommendation out of MemTest86, MemTest86+ and HCI MemTest?

I have always used memtest86, but that was a few years ago when i first built my system these new ones might be a bit better im not sure. But memtest86 always worked just fine for me.

Assuming the system is stable and passes MemTest86 as it is, "Auto" settings and a frequency of 1600MHz, is there any harm in leaving it as it is?

Any other input would be deeply appreciated!

Yah what keep it at 1600mhz? Yah thats fine if you want to, anything 2133mhz and under is perfectly fine.
