Hi, I've just installed my Xeon E5450 in my socket 775 motherboard, and need to change my microcodes as I am getting error codes when I turn my PC on (disappears too fast to read)
Any help will be great, thanks.

A Xeon E5450 is an LGA771 processor, not an LGA775 one. The sockets are nearly physically and electrically identical, but not completely identical as Intel did not want people to be sticking cheap LGA775 Core 2s in entry level servers with registered memory instead of expensive Xeons. The differences between LGA771 and LGA775 are a couple of little plastic keys that are supposed to prevent an LGA771 processor from being stuck in an LGA775 socket and vice versa and there are a few lands on each processor that tell the...

The differences between LGA771 and LGA775 are a couple of little plastic keys that are supposed to prevent an LGA771 processor from being stuck in an LGA775 socket and vice versa and there are a few lands on each processor that tell the motherboard which socket the processor is designed for. You can cut off the little plastic keys on the LGA775 socket to take an LGA771 processor and you can also apply a little bit of conductive tape to the bottom of the LGA771 processor to have the motherboard think it is an LGA775 processor. If you did not do the tape mod, lots of errors will result and the board will likely not boot properly. Full details are here.

If you have already modded your CPU or bought one pre-modded off eBay, you may simply need to upgrade your BIOS. Your board would complain if it had an older BIOS that did not support this later-generation chip. You can download the latest BIOS here.

Good luck and hope it works.

Thanks for the reply, and the processor has had the tape on the back. For some reason it doesn't work with Windows 8.1 but works with Windows 7 and gives great FPS in battlefield 4 as well as running below under 60 degrees C under load for an hour or two. Thanks again
