Hi All,

I am planning to upgrade my current rig so as to have a machine future ready for the next 3-5 years of gaming.

Below are the current specs

Core i3 530 (1st Gen)(2.93 Ghz i think)
Intel own DH55TC Mobo
4 2GB Kingston RAM 1333 DDR3 CL9 (4x2 = 8GB)
XFX HD5770 1GB (Egg Shaped)
CM 600W PSU (not Thunder series or above)
WD Caviar Green 500GB HDD

I searched the net and have found below upgrade (replacements)

Core i5 4460 (Rs 11500)
Gigabyte H97 d3h mobo (Rs 8250)
1 8GB Corsair Vengeance 1600 DDR3 RAM (CMZ8GX3M1A1600C10) (Rs 4200)
Asus Strix GTX960 2GB (Owned)
Corsair RM650 PSU (Rs 7800) or Cooler Master Thunder 600W (Rs 4490)
WD Caviar Black 500GB HDD (Rs 2850)

I need to know if the above upgrade is good for 3-5 yrs of gaming ??

Also please feel free to suggest better options (but not too much expensive then the pricing on these) except for Asus Strix as I own that card already.

I consulted a local computer guy (from whom I buy Games) and he said that Antec PSU is not good. Is that true ? I need a modular PSU which is Haswell compatible. I found one in Antec but now I am skeptical. How is the Cooler Master I listed ?? I think it's Haswell ready.

What should be the capacity of PSU that I should buy for the replacements ?

My HD5770 died about 3 months ago and since then I hooked up Asus Strix GTX960 in my current rig.

I was able to play Far Cry 4, GTA V, AC Rogue, Dying Light pretty good and all maxed out except DL. But I guess I am not doing justice to the card.

I have been experiencing issues like MoBo not powering sometimes, Noises from PSU constantly and now recently BSOD (which I think HDD is causing)

[Note: Except for recently experienced BSOD all issues were there before replacing Graphics card. Hence GTX960 is not the culprit.]

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate (64 Bit) with no icon on Desktop except for a GPU Gadget and still it takes a complete actual 3-4 mins when the system is responsive for tasks.

I live in East Delhi area and Nehru Place (Delhi's Computer Market) is accessible to me.

Please assist. Looking for lot of experienced responses. !!!

You don't want a single 8GB stick of RAM. You would be better off with two 4GB sticks, in a matched set, to ensure they operate together without issue, AND in dual channel operation which doubles the memory bandwidth.

You don't want either of those power supplies. Corsair RM units are tier 3, CM Thunder units used to be tier 4, even worse than tier 3, but are apparently discontinued or have changed OEM's and have no current reliable reviews to base tiering on. Either way, they've always been pretty terrible.

You want something Tier 1 or 2 for your card. I realize options are limited in your region, but I'd try to find something made by Antec (Neo Eco series, VP-450, High current gamer, True power classic), Seasonic, XFX, Super Flower or EVGA (B2, G2, P2 or V series). While it's true that some Antec and EVGA units are rather poor quality, they also make some VERY good units as well, as I listed the good models above.

For your system with the GTX 960 you do not need anything larger than a very good quality 450w unit. I'd probably say to just use your current unit temporarily until you can get one, but try to do so as soon as possible to avoid any potential hardware failure that might be due to issues with that unit. If you notice any problems at all, discontinue using it.

The rest of the upgrades look fine.

@darkbreeze

So if I buy 2 of Corsair Vengeance 4GB DDR3 1600 (CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9)(Rs 2243) and put them as Dual Channel on Gigabyte H97 D3H would I get best performance ?? Is that what you're suggesting ??

Also, I saw Corsair offering 8 GB (2x4) Dual Channel of its own. Is that different then above what I would do ?? (I understand over-clocking but I won't be doing it at all)

Finally, Based on your suggestion I can't find a Tier 1 PSU (India has Antec, CM, Corsair, Seasonic PSUs only) please help me find a specific one.

Also, If I go for 450W PSU Wouldn't that cripple other components like Processor, RAM, HDD etc. ?? Because 450W would be ample just for GTX960 isn't it ??

Sorry to cause confusion here but I am expressing all my thoughts so that you all understand my query better.

No, 450w would be plenty for the WHOLE system, which is what graphics cards recommendations are based on. The only thing that changes that recommendation is if there are overclocking considerations of either the CPU or graphics card. Then you generally want to add about 100w to the recommended capacity of the power supply. If you don't plan on overclocking, then a 430w unit is plenty for the GTX 960. If you plan to overclock the graphics card or processor, I'd want a 520w or higher Tier 1 or 2 unit in there.

This would be a good choice if you don't plan to overclock and if your card only requires a single 6 pin connector (Some GTX 960 models have different power pin requirements): http://www.flipkart.com/antec-vp450p-450-watts-psu/p/itmda3ncpuga3hpu?pid=PSUDA3NCT4Z4SKKR&al=tBfG9Mha2x%2BdXjI4LEz2IcldugMWZuE7JTWSsYnGIuVH0HJ9xGwt5xYyTxsNy2qQqzV8XtCyswY%3D&ref=L%3A198797883660127807&srno=b_19

Or this if you do overclock the graphics card, or CPU, or even if you don't it would still be an even better choice:

As far as the memory goes, so long as the memory comes in a 2x 4GB matched kit (Don't buy modules individually, even if they are the same model number as there's no guarantee they'll "play nice" together) and is a decent series made by Corsair, G.SKill, Crucial, Mushkin, Kingston or Samsung, they should be fine. A matched Corsair kit would be a good choice.

@ darkbreeze

I agree with 500+W suggestion but I checked the one you posted Seasonic and found that it is a single 12V rail PSU. Is it even Haswell Compatible ??

Also, I searched alot but didn't find a pair of Corsair Vengeance. The only option for me would be to order 2 of 4GB RAM online. They would technically be identical. Would that solve ??

Almost any power supply can be used with Haswell if you turn off the power saving C states in the bios. Being a single rail has nothing to do with it. Not having a group regulated design has everything to do with it.

If you want a unit that's not group regulated, be prepared to pay a higher premium, especially in your market. This would work fine:

Ok so here is my final upgrade -

Core i5 (4460) - Rs 11490
Gigabyte H97 D3H - Rs 8290
2x4GB 1600 G.Skill Sniper DDR3 (F3-12800CL9D-8GBSR) - Rs 4900
WD Caviar Blue 500GB HDD - Rs 3400
Seasonic S12G - 500W PSU - 6500

Now, Please suggest me a good SSD where I only need to have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit installed along with some Softwares like Office 2007, vlc , etc.
