I bought a 240gb ssd, because all of my stuff is on a 1tb hdd. I wanted to know how I can transfer my OS (windows 7) and a few other programmes etc... onto my ssd.
You can easily do that using a cloning/migrating software. However, as @LordConrad mentioned it's best to perform a clean install if you have your Windows Installation media in sight. Even if you don't have it and decide to clone the OS, it's strongly recommended to re-install the programs at least, due to the possibility of facing some performance and loading issues with the software.
Here's a tutorial that might help you though: http://lifehacker.com/5837543/how-to-migrate-to-a-solid-state-drive-without-reinstalling-windows
Backup your data and install everything fresh. Unless you do an exact clone (which you can't because your SSD is smaller than your hard drive), it's better to start fresh or you're asking for problems.

you can try to use the Redo Backup (http://redobackup.org/) but it's better to do a clean installation with fresh OS, drivers and patches. the thing here is the fact of time you have to spend on the task.
