Is Clonezilla safe?

I am looking for software to create an images of my PCs. This would permit total recovery of a PC, should it crash. I tried Acronis, but in my case it could not handle Windows 7 (many other people had the same experience.) Clonezilla claims to be capable, but some web sites say it has spyware...other people claim that it's OK and the exe file just triggers antivirus reports. Question: is Clonezilla safe? Are there other programs that are known to be free of malware? (I read the Paragon manual, but could not understand the translation.)

Once installed, any of those applications are trivial to use.

Unlike Clonezilla, that creates an image of the whole partition whether blocks are used or not. Clonezilla is more efficient as it only has to look at used blocks; it will fall back to the less efficient "dd" if it doesn't recognize the file system.
