So my current graphics card (msi geforce gtx 470) broke after a long time of use, and I'm looking to get a new graphics card, but one thing hits me.

My motherboard (ASUS Maximus II Formula) has ports for only PCI Express x16, while the msi geforce gtx 970 (the one with the two large fans and the dragon logo) is PCI Express 3.0 x16. I read a lot about how graphics cards are made to be backward compatible, but I read a forum thread where it said that it isn't backward compatible all the way, that I would have to get a geforce gtx 760 or something.

To make this short:
If I get a MSI Nvidia Geforce GTX 970, will I be able to use/run it with my setup?:

  • Motherboard: ASUS Maximus II Formula
(Ports for graphics cards): PCI Express x16
    Power box: 850W
    Ram: 4GB (Computer tells me it's 3GB)

And if not, what's the best graphics card that I can use for my computer?

Thank you very much for taking the time to read and answer this :)

Solution
Your motherboard has two PCIE 2.0 x16 slots. You'll be fine, assuming your power supply has the correct PCI power cables.

Your PC is telling you that you have 3GB of useable RAM, most likely. That's because the operating system is using up 1GB just by being on. Windows is a greedy RAM eater.

For some reason, on my motherboard's manual it doesn't say 2.0,
Are you sure?

This is sweet
