Can I temporarily use single-channel 8GB RAM then 16GB Dual-channel later?

I'm waiting for RAM to come in the mail. Is it possible to pull the one 8GB RAM out of the old PC and use it in the new one to install windows? Or should I wait until the RAM I need gets here?
