Well after a lot of searching about very similar topics, I decided to start a new one since I can't get an answer from those. Please help!

I have a laptop with Windows 8, that I'm unable to repair boot issues on since it didn't come with an OS disk. Most of my data is backed up on an external drive other than the last 3 weeks but I happen to really need those files. I took out the drive and connected it to my desktop running 8.1, but the drive doesn't show up in My Computer, however it does appear in Disk Management. So here are the things I've tried so far:

- there was no alphabet assigned to it so I tried using CMD's DIKSPART option but for some reason, it does not show up as a "Volume". I can see it under "list disk" but not under "list volume" so I'm unable to assign it a drive-letter.

- it shows up as a healthy single GPT partition but all options are greyed out. I can't convert it to dynamic disk either.

- even though I see no partitions in disk management on my desktop, when I put it back in my laptop and tried to install 8.1 on it (or "upgrade" if you will) from a USB, that screen where you see all your drive partitions, I see them all, including Primary, Data and Recovery partitions, with the options of formatting them and installing a fresh copy of 8.1 which obviously is not what I want do

- not sure if it matters but I read about how drives sometimes don't receive enough power through USB when connected to an external device, but I just wanted to mention that I have a USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA adapter that comes with its own power source so that's not an issue

Been at it for the past 7 hours. I'm pooped. Please ask if I missed anything.

Hi
With the drive in your laptop, boot 8.1 from the USB as you did before, but instead of clicking the Install now button, click on the Repair your computer option bottom left.
From there you will get numerous options to assist you with troubleshooting that system.
