Hey everyone,

So the other day I was gifted an old PC and I was considering converting it into a somewhat decent gaming PC. I was originally going to build an entire computer, but I figured if I could swap out the graphics card and PSU, I could make due with a medium level gaming rig. At first I thought this was a good idea but now I'm starting to have doubts that the processor may be a serious bottleneck.

The PC as is:
Motherboad: IPLBL-LB (HP Benicia)
Processor: Intel Dual core E8400 3.00Ghz (motherboard does not allow overclocking)
Ram: 6GB (8 max for the mobo)
PSU: Generic 300W
Cases: HP Minitower

I figured if I swap the PSU for a 500W (suggestions welcome), I'd have enough power to put in a decent GPU. Here's what I'm unsure about, I was considering getting a GTX 970. Would this be total overkill? I figured that getting a good card would save me in the long run if I decided to go for a full build.

Opinions?

A lot of newer games aren't even going to run on a Dual core (and this one is quite old), so yes it would be a big bottleneck for a 970. This computer is not worth upgrading, as you would have to replace everything in order to build even a lower end "gaming" machine. Sorry for the bad news!
