So, my mainboard is defective, but still works with some problems. I have a Gigabyte H87-D3H mainboard and Xeon processor (no overclocking) and want to upgrade to a better one. I have choosen this one:

Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 7
> http://geizhals.de/gigabyte-ga-z97x-gaming-7-a1107833.html?hloc=at&hloc=de

What I like:

  • ■ high quality parts
    ■ shielded audio
    ■ killer lan chip for gaming

Money up to this price range is no issue. I just want high quality parts. I could buy a H97 board, but there is nothing in that tier range. I choose Gigabyte, as I have experience with Gigabyte board and don't want reinstall Windows 7 and Ubuntu 14.04. Choosing same manufacturer I hope will reduce the chance of reinstalling the system.

My concern is, will my Xeon 1230v3 be supported on this mainboard? I have Scythe Mugen 4 cpu cooler

Will this make problems with heatsinks or ram slots? On my older board, I can't use bigger rams, only small or standard sized ram.

Did I overlook something? It would be nice, if you can help me to check if the board is ok for me. I don't want overclock and my cpu can't do it. But I want a high quality board as possible for the money, like said before. My current setup is:

I did not include storage, optical drive and monitor. It will have enough SATA ports. I only need 4 at this time of writing.

The Z97X Gaming 7 is indeed a very good motherboard. It supports any Haswell processor and Xeon E3 V3 processor (So the 1230V3 is also supported).

However one or two questions. Why do you like the Killar LAN chip for gaming? The Intel chip is known to be better in pretty much every way. Not that I mind motherboard with Killer LAN as I have one myself but I'm just wondering.

I think because you're not overclocking and if you don't plan to SLI in the future this will be enough:

Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty H97 Killer ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($94.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $94.99
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Make sure you have a case that is atleast 200mm wide for the Mugen CPU cooler. If you have low profile RAM you will be fine otherwise you might have to change RAM slots to the securandary ones.

I will use same case and all other parts as before. I really want change the motherboard only. I just ask because the heathink is too big for the cpu cooler? Are the ram slots too near to the cpu cooler?

I read a lot about the killer lan, which is especially good for gamers. It priorities video data and gaming data (whatever this is) and makes sure the connection is stable and low ping for gaming, if somewhere an update process starts. It just sounds good, I don't have any experience with it.

And thanks to your seggestion, but I want have a Gigabyte for compatibility with my current installation. Also I like the whole high quality build and the audio parts.

And I don't mind if it is Z or H at current time. Maybe some years later I change the cpu to a K overcklockable one. Who knows.

I really want make sure not to oberlooked anything related to compatibility.

If you want Gigabyte It's fine but ASRock would be just as compatible. A certain brand isn't more compatible than the other.

And by the way the Killer LAN is just marketing and is not better than Intel, It's a bit worse but it doesn't matter both will work fine.

Everything should be fine.

Thank your for your help. After your answers and my research I think I'll buy the Asrock Z97 Extreme6 (which is essentially the Extreme9 without four sli).

It have better LAN than Gigabytes killer, it have high quality build and good audio too. And I hope not to get into trouble by using a different brand and chipset. I don't want to reinstall everything. On the other side, it wouldn't be too bad.

Did I overlook something?
