Connecting old HDD to new build PC

Guys I am having some data on my Old PC's HDD so I want that data on my new build PC so can I connnect that HDD to my new PC without worrying about Viruses?
How can I check if that HDD has any Virus?
Or do I even need to check?

I am assuming that you have a new drive for this build, but you want to keep your data from you old computer on the old HDD.

You should be able to connect it safely to your new computer. Don't run anything off of it though. Once in Windows (after installing the old drive) scan it with your anti-virus. Also couldn't hurt to scan it with MalwareBytes.

However formatting will delete the files he wants to save.

1. Install Windows
2. Install Hardware drivers
3. Install quality AV program https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/
4. Run Windows Update the 26 times it needs to finish
5. Check for updated drivers
6. Connect old HD to new machine. I'd suggest a BlacX docking station appropriate for the type of HD you have so you can continue to use old HD as backup.

7. Copy the stuff over
8. Format external drive and utilize for backup.

would you add in
6.5 run AV on the contents of the old disk before copying?

or would you assume that the copying process would catch anything.

You need to back up the stuff on it or take what you think you will use and then format the drive and if its a boot drive you will need to reinstall windows and im not drunk were in a kind community here. Everybody makes mistakes
