Best Gaming Rig for under $600?

Hey guys, I'm thinking of upgrading my brothers old core 2 duo pc and so far i'm a bit confused as to what parts would be best for under $600 AU.

My friend has given me his old GTX 660 so i was wondering what would be a good base to build on that.
I've searched the forums here and i've seen some old 3rd and 2nd gen i5's were suggested but i was wondering if there were any newer 4th gen processors that won't be overkill.

Based on my own research, I was thinking an i5-4690k for the processor and just 8gb, either crucial or g.skill for the ram. As for the mobo... I'm really undecided. The HDD will be recycled though and i'll buy an SSD drive later on when the budget permits.

All suggestions welcome and thanks in advance.

At that budget level the overclocking setup will put you over the limit (z97, 4690k, cpu cooler). Instead, you are more likely looking at a non-overclocking setup like the one below...
