How good would both chips perform when multi-tasking?
By multi-tasking i mean playing games, while listening to music/having a live stream open/browsing internet. Mostly doing that while playing games like CS:GO and LoL. How well would each CPU perform in a game like GTA 5 or Battlefield 4. Plus i have heard that the AMD CPUs go great with AMD GPUs, so what would be the best GPU to go for? The options i am considering are the 750Ti and the r7 260x.
And is the Intel upgrade path to the i5 chips worth going for G3258 instead of the 860k? Since i can always save a bit more and buy a new motherboard when upgrading
Thanks.

Good day!

Pentium is a beast in single-threaded apps like web, office work, and games that use 1 or 2 cores. Games like BF4, GTA V, Witcher 3 may have stutter if you crank the settings up. This CPU if a very solid performer but for games that use more than 2 cores, 860k would be a better overall choice.

If you pair the g3258 with GTX 750 Ti or r7 260x, then you can play those games well at high, medium without stutter anyways. If you want to go with a stronger GPU, go with 860k

Also, if you do editing, rendering, streaming or any other stuff that uses many cores, 860k would be a better choice.

If you do "casual gaming", g3258 will be better.

Honestly, if you have microcenter near by, I would take fx-8320+motherboard combo for $150...

I updated the post a bit.
I know that the Intel upgrade path is way better than AMD, but my question is: Is it worth it? I can always just buy a new motherboard when upgrading.

You can but its a lot cheaper and easier to swap out your processor for a faster one. May as well not "spend the money twice" but it also depends how long you plan to keep the system. If you would be looking for more performance in like a year or two then the Intel is the way to go. However if you think you'll sit on it for a while, 3-4 years from now a lot of way faster new stuff will be out, that you'll want to dump your processor and motherboard and go new.

Both CPUs will play those games with the GPU's you suggested at 720p very well, you MIGHT be able to get them going in 1080p playably with the details turned down a bit.

Thanks for answering, right now i have a 1280 x 1024 monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 193T), so 1080p isn't my standard. I will keep this in mind, but now i will wait for more answers about the multi-tasking side before actually making up my mind.

Well, right off the bat, if you're planning on playing GTA V the Pentium won't cut it. It's a dual-core, & the minimum is a quad-core...so even if you can manage to get it running, you shouldn't expect it to run very well. In that sense, the X4 is the better choice (being a quad-core CPU).

If your budget is limited, go with the X4 build. If you can swing it, an i3 build might be better (although even the i3s are starting to struggle on newer games).

Thanks for answering.
According to steam, yes the minimum processor requirements are a quad core processor.
But according to this website: http://www.techspot.com/review/1017-best-budget-gaming-cpu/page6.html the G3258 is superior, even in stock clocks (vs 860k stock and oc'd). And according to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1Z-tsC_4ng , the G3258 paired with the GTX 750Ti are running GTA 5 just fine.

Honestly, if you have microcenter near by, I would take fx-8320+motherboard combo for $150 or fx6300+motherboard combo for $100, if you want your system to last as long as possible without upgrading. If you plan on upgrading your CPU, go with the pentium for now, and upgrade to an i5 later but that would cost you quite a lot of money.

Also, AMD CPU+ AMD GPU vs. AMD CPU + NVIDIA GPU makes no difference. The CPU and the GPU would work fine together either way.

If you want to go cheap, for the GPU, you can get r7 260x. If you want more reliability, less heat, and less energy consumed, go GTX 750 Ti. If you want a good 1080p gaming card for a little more, r9 270x is also out there with the new r9 370x creeping around, but you may have to upgrade your power supply to something 600w-750w+

Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the long and explainatory answer!
I don't plan on streaming, editing or rendering any thing at all, just plain gaming with some everyday use and school work (presentations, word documents and such). The G3258 + 750Ti seems like such a great deal to me right now. I guess that answers my CPU and GPU questions!

Yep, no problem. if you pair a CPU with an appropriate GPU you really do not need to worry about lag, stutter or bottleneck if you put the game graphics to an appropriate level.
G3258 + GTX 750 Ti is a great choice for gaming at 1080p. You can max out most games, and play new titles at medium-high preset.

Good luck! :)
