I have always used Nvidia and been happy with it till lately some of the GTX 970 cards have gone bad I was using, was thinking about switching to AMD R9 390X but I like some of the tweaks Nvidia gives ya which should I go with and are the drivers any good for AMD?

A simplified comparison between those 2 brand's latest cards:

Better Temperatures? Nvidia.
Better Power Consumption? Nvidia.
Better Drivers? Nvidia.
Better Control Panel? Nvidia.
Better price : performance? Depends on the card.
Better Overclock? Nvidia.

Well you may ask, then why would anyone choose AMD? These are a few reasons why:
In a R9 390 VS GTX 970 if you are not going to overclock i would pick the R9 390.
In a R9 390 VS GTX 970 if you are going to 1440P i...

The diference betwen amd and nvidia in terms of drivers and performance with it, is that amd tooks more time to release it. So you will get better performance in games some weeks or months later after the games. Nvidia release their drivers more quikcly and that is why nvidia have better performance in new game when tested.

You have the example for the Assasins Creed Unity...

The R9 390X is also a very strong graphics card for the price point too however nvidia is superior in many different aspects stated above.
Also since the R9 300s are slightly new the drivers are no where near perfect but this will most likely change.

If you have a 970, just wait till the 400 series or Nvidia Pascal comes out. If you are coming off of another card, I would go for the 390X if I were you. An excessive amount of vram, similar performance to a GTX 980, cheaper than GTX 980, and you won't get screwed over in the future with drivers. Look at the R9 290X vs 780 Ti when they were in their prime. 780 Ti always won. Now the 290X destroys the 780 Ti. Plus I have never had a problem with AMD where as the 4 cards I had that were Nvidia would driver crash occasionally.

GeForce GTX 980 $499
Radeon R9 390X $429
GeForce GTX 970 $329
Radeon R9 390 $329

Price wise its the R9 390 vs the GTX 970 they are both about $329. Since you have a GTX 970 I think your right to just hang on and upgrade later there is a good chance prices will come down in the future. Of course I think the R9 390x does come with 8GB if you want more VRAM.
