Disk Read Error --> No bootable device found

My HP pavilion dv4 laptop froze up while I was using it and upon rebooting it I got a Disk Read error press ctr + alt+ del to reboot screen. After using a little Google, I tried resetting my bios to default and then running a hard disk test from both the Bios and the hp utility. The Hp utility gave a black screen and nothing happened and the Bios hard disk test gave a Hard Disk Not Exist error. I then tried reseating the hard drive and got the same Disk Read error message. After a few more reboot attempts I started getting a No Bootable device found message instead.

I am out of ideas on what to try next and don't know what could be wrong, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: I forgot to mention it is an old laptop and still running windows 7 if that makes a difference.

So I assume there is no way of recovering any un-backed up data? (not a whole lot since my last back up so not a huge deal)

And once I get a new hard drive, how can I reinstall windows? The OS came from HP so I do not have an install disk or a recovery disk. If I create a recovery disk from a different pc will that work?

Hi there Inomyacbs,

Is your HDD recognized by BIOS? In case it is, you can try using some data recovery tool for DOS. There are many DOS data recovery threads in the forum.
Regarding your OS question, it may be a good idea to contact Microsoft on that.
