Hey, I recently bought a Gigabyte Z97M-D3H and was messing with the bios. I saw that I could change the CPU clock multiplier, so i was wondering what a safe overclock would be for the 4790s. As of now I have it running at 3.6ghz at really low temperatures, like 35* C. Also what would a good ram speed be for Corsair DDR3 ram. I have two 8gb sticks of ram running at 1600mhz, would overclocking really boost performance by much?

Thanks
Avi

You can overclock the CPU, i saw people reach over numbers close to 5GHz with air cooling.BUT, you don't want to do it on a stock cooler IN ANY MEANS. Stock coolers are only designed to keep it run cool while ideling and while not under heavy load. For OCs you would want a pro cooling system, you should check out Cooler Master,Thermaltake and Corsair for that. For the RAM, you are just risking a nice pair of 8GB sticks. RAM OCs are commonly unstable and there is a chance of burning the cores of the down. Try it with the CPU with a aftermarket cooler, but don't push too hard if you'r new to OC. Cheers :)

The 4790k yah. The 4790s is locked you are not getting it to 5ghz with a BLCK oc.

I thought the 4790s was locked too... I saw in bios that it allowed me to change the multiplier somehow from 0-40 and its at 32 by default. My desktop is hackintoshed and when i click the "About the Mac" the frequency of my cpu changes whenever i change the multiplier somehow.

Screwed up there. Posted about the 4790K. But yeah Dunlop is right; I think you can't overclock a locked 4790S by increasing it's multiplier. All credit goes to Dunlop :)
