My Samsung 850 Evo 500gb is arriving tomorrow. I will have the 500GB ssd and a 1TB HHD.

Currently I have a 120gb Sandisk Plus which is 520 MB/s Read but only 180 MB/s Write.

I'm curious what you all would do with it? I was thinking either just using it as external storage or setting it up as an auto backup drive for windows?

Thoughts?

Yes. And even with writes, that drive is faster than an HDD.
Don't stress over it. Just use it as another 120GB drive, for whatever purpose. Performance in between your Samsung and a traditional HDD.
Couple of games, docs, photo editing, whatever.

I honestly wasn't sure what if anything would be impacted by the slower write speed limiting what I used it for.

My PC was primarily built for gaming/media.

gtx 980 ti
16gb ram

Storage of movies/media is also a good use. In fact, a very good use since they generally only get written once and then it's only reads from there on out. Games as well. Doesn't help that much for games except in file, asset, map and level loading, but those things generally are pretty laggy with a HDD.

Music storage is a good use as well.

No, because aside from the initial write, and use as a scratch disk, in which case it's still much faster than a mechanical HDD and things like scratch disks, temp files and very large files can add to shortening the life of your primary SSD (To some degree), most of these uses are single writes and then read only from then on so it's unlikely to drastically affect the remainder of your SSD's potential data write endurance. USAFRet might even have some other, possibly better ideas.
