Dual xeon for gaming and server hosting?

So I'm looking at getting a dual xeon E5-2620 setup with 32gb or ECC ddr4 (16gb per CPU). and a gtx 970. i would like to be able to game and host a server that i would be gaming on and say what ever server that i would feel the need to run that i would want to play on. And possibly a 24/7 minecraft server open to everyone. Is this setup WAY over kill for what I'm looking to do or would i just be better off getting a 5820k or something for what I'm trying to do.

We can't answer your question easily.

You need to qualify how many clients can run on your server and actually limit that. You can't just allow "everybody" or you just crash the system.

I think a dual-CPU setup is very problematic.

I think a 5820K setup is probably ideal, then investigate carefully how much processing power you require to properly host a server.

*You do realize you'd then have to leave your computer running 24/7? Is this a commitment you're willing to make?

Even doing a simple reboot is problematic as you really need to give advance warning (will be offline between whatever).

what do you mean by "running a dual cpu is problematic" like as in it won't work or that it does not untilize all the cores.
And yes i realize the limitations of how many people can come on a server at a time lol I'm just not sure of a exact number yet. a

It's gonna be hard to find someone that has the kinda hardware and is using it they way you want. Personally I believe it's best to run a separate server and gaming rig. For one, doing all that at once on a single machine will likely stress the storage system. Beefing up the storage system is just more cost. Two having a seperate server keeps you from losing any uptime should something happen to the main rig.

For the little i know about servers, you need quality upload internet, raid setup, many cores, i dont think gpu is required unless you want to stream a particular game from it.

Well my adviced, if you have the FX 8320 to toy with before getting in big expense, i would just do that and learn from it

I have no idea what he means by that, dual cpu systems arent "problematic".

That said, something like the 5820k would most likely be sufficient - minecraft server runs pretty much all its workload on one core/thread. a 5820k has 6 cores / 12 threads, so should be plenty of power left to play games aswell.

thats kinda what i was thinking in that a 5820k would be better. but I've also seen a few things where it is supposed to be possible to optimize your minecraft server to run on multiple cores. cause the huge 25000+ people one probably don't runoff just one core lol. but i know what your saying in that they do you can change that though if you look into how.

I'm almost positive that the minecraft server client is only single threaded though. Clockspeed and single thread performance is probably going to be the biggest factor in determining how well the server performs, along with disk read and write rates.

yeah they are single threaded but i read a thread on another forum that says you can go into task manager and select the task (minecraft server obviously) and right click it and choose set affinity which is where you pick the cores you want to use.

^^ this is the link so you guys can see what i saw for your selves and infer what you think it means

...yeah that doesn't change anything or change the fact that the server itself is single threaded.

All affinity does is tell the program that "hey, you can use these cores but not these cores if you want"

Whether or not the program actually WILL...that depends on how many threads it has. You can't change how many threads it uses by adjusting settings; Unfortunately it's just a part of the game itself.
