Need Help With My PC Build! I Need an AMD CPU That Won't Bottleneck GTX 980ti!

So, I'm planning on replacing my AMD Radeon 7700 with a GTX 980ti. However, my CPU is an AMD FX-6300 so obviously there will be a bottleneck there. The problem is that I want to get an i5-4690k but my motherboard only supports AMD CPU's. I was thinking about changing my motherboard but this ended up being way to expensive. Is there just a clean swap I can do to my CPU which will ensure that I won't bottleneck my GTX 980ti? I'd rather not go over £700. Thank you!

Solution
There are a lot of motherboards that could work with the 4690K, but you need to ask yourself if you want to overclock it or not. Because if you don't you might as well get a cheaper, non-K CPU.

For overclocking you will need a Z97 (or older Z87) motherboard, for non-overclocking any socket 1150 motherboard will do, with the exception of haswell refresh CPU's only working out of the box on the newer H97/Z97 motherboards. Older ones will usually require a BIOS update before they can boot haswell refresh CPU's.
In short I would advice:
- i5 4690K + aftermarket cooler + Z97 motherboard ~£250
or
- (Non-K) i5 4460 + H97 motherboard ~£200

What motherboard do you have? If it supports the 125W CPUs, then any of the higher end FX series chipsets should work. I use the FX-8350 (overclocked), and it doesn't bottleneck my dual GTX 980s in SLI, so you shouldn't have any problems with a similar CPU with that video card.

I want a gtx 980ti on a 1080p monitor for the future, so I won't need to upgrade in ages. If thats a stupid idea, do you have any suggestions?

There is no such CPU, though you could invest in overclocking your FX6300 to close the gap. For overclocking you would need a solid cooler and maybe a good quality PSU to get a stable overclock. It is cheaper than buying a new motherboard and CPU, but it will never perform as good as an intel CPU. Even an intel i3 will perform better.

To run the GTX980Ti you don't need the top i5 CPU, an i5 4460 will run it just fine for example, so you could upgrade to an H97 motherboard plus the i5 4460 CPU for about £200,-.

That motherboard will handle an FX-8350, so I'd recommend that. If you get a decent aftermarket cooling setup, you could overclock a bit and get even more performance out of it, but the stock setup should be sufficient if you're only using one 980ti at 1080p. Either way, that CPU will give you room to grow later on if you decide to upgrade to an SLI setup, or whatever.

If you are only running a 1080p system, a single GTX970/R9 290/390 will be more than enough. An intel CPU will still make it perform better than an AMD CPU.

Ok, so forget about the GTX 980ti, everyone is saying it is overkill. How about if I get a GTX 980 and then change to i5-4690k. What is the cheapest motherboard that would work with this but obviously won't die?

I would rather have a K as it's only £30 more expensive with the motherboard. Got any suggestions for an aftermarket cooler?
I don't care about noise at all, just if it's a good cooler for cheap

My personal experience with my AMD 8350 is that it rocks, and I have no GPU bottleneck. I have a 980 ti coming in 2 days. Will update you on performance. Hope this can help you.
