I recently installed a MSI GTX 751 OC 1GB gpu into my computer. I then noticed that my computer was running somewhat slower than before i installed the gpu. Could this be because i am running the gpu with a 240W psu?

Did you say 240 watt PSU?....

I'd highly highly recommend upgrading to something a little more substantial. You can get a good quality 430 watt psu for about $30 on newegg right now and that'll be plenty of power for the card. 240 watts is WAYYYY too little.

Something was dowloading in the background, so it's running smoothly now. Can there be damage to my computer in the future if i don't upgrade my psu?

It won't necessarily damage anything except maybe your PSU.

The PSU is rated to a certain amount of power it can provide; If you try to draw more than it's rated for you'll be severely reducing its lifetime, and additionally the power it provides may not be as clean.

Seriously. Make the jump and get something a little beefier.
