Here is my current build http://pcpartpicker.com/b/Wmf7YJ

I'd like to carefully look into overclocking my AMD FX-6300 from 3.5 to maybe 4-4.3ghz if possible. Now, i've ordered a new PSU and a new after market cooler for the job.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608040 The cooler is a noctua NH-U12S

This is the PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151107&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-Mobile&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-Mobile-_-pla-_-Power+Supplies-_-N82E16817151107&gclid=CjwKEAjwiZitBRCy0pb3rIbG9XwSJACmuvvzMce_opuC7GGIcQPTowAVmPV9Im-HuiCJa9UcYMN_4hoC5H7w_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

I understand motherboards and CPU's vary and every cpu can be different so i'd like to make sure I go about this, should I choose to, in the most optimal and safe fashion possible for my build. As you can see in my part list my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P ATX AM3+

AMD catalyst control center now has a CPU overdrive feature, though I don't want to trust it until I hear more opinions. It seems to be that the most popular method is via bios. I have very limited knowledge on using the bios to overclock a cpu, and in fact i've never done any overclocking before period. I'm going to read through the manuals of my cpu and motherboard to maybe get a better idea. I have hardware monitor installed and ready to check for temps.

If anyone could just point me in the right direction to where I can read about overclocking this cpu it'd be greatly appreciated. A guide or tutorial would be fantastic.

Btw, I added another comment above.

1) That will depend on your board's BIOS. For yours, it is in the MIT section. Look on page 35 of you MB manual. It is under Advanced CPU Core Features and called Core Performance Boost.

2) When cores quit working in Prime95. I also like to use Intel Burn Test for faster stability checking. I use the default settings and just run it as is. If the OC is unstable, it will tell you. http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4965-intelburntest.html

3) Yes, it is the most common pgm used. But takes a long time because it is thorough. I use IBT because it is faster and I have never had an unstable build if it passed IBT.

4) Voltage does not affect clock speed. It is only increased to keep the CPU...

It's very easy to OC the FX-6300. Turn off Turbo mode and increase the CPU clock multiplier one click at a time, checking for stability and watching temps between increases. When an increase proves unstable, you probably need to start increasing the core voltage a bit. Take it up .005V at a time and repeat the stability test. When you pass 1.5V, you are getting into extreme voltage for that processor and probably should not go any higher. Although there are different schools of thought on that.

If you are looking for an actual tutorial, the AMD Overdrive manual follows their AOD program which you may want to check out.

Good to hear because franky i'm quite scared. lol.

So 1.) Where is this turbo mode located?
2.) What indicates an unstable increase?
3.)Is prime95 good enough software for a stress test?
4.) Could you briefly explain how voltage affects clock speed?

4) Voltage does not affect clock speed. It is only increased to keep the CPU stable as you increase clock speed. The clock speed of a CPU is determined by: (Base clock) x (clock multiplier) The FX-6300 has a base clcok of 200 MHz. It has a clock multiplier of 17.5 So, (17.5 x 200 = 3500 MHz)

One last thing, is the cpu overdrive feature in catalyst control center safe to use? Or should I go with using the BIOS?
