Do SATA PCIe cards benefit from IDE > AHCI mode conversion?

Hello,

I just cloned my C:/ HD to SSD. During my research for different SSDs i ran into some topics about changing my SATA mode from IDE to AHCI for better performance. I checked my bios and my SATA settings are currently on IDE. Since this is my work computer, i'd love to squeeze out any performance improvements.

From what i understand, its s simple as modifying a registry value > Change SATA settings in Bios > Restart but, this is for your mobo's internal SATA, correct?

What about for SATA PCIe cards? Will i see any improvements there? I ditched my ,mobo SATA for the PCIe card because my mobo is from 2009 and doesnt support 6gbps speeds, the add-on card does.

Any helpful advise or suggestions for this process?

Regards,

Settings in the motherboard's BIOS wouldn't affect the mode run by the add-in card. Unless that has it's own BIOS setting utility at boot-up it would probably run in AHCI mode by default. The motherboard BIOS only affects drives plugged into it's ports.

You want to run SSDs in AHCI mode. AHCI enables NCQ, which allows the drive to process multiple requests simultaneously. In IDE mode it handles one request at a time. With small file read/writes, the drive can find the data faster than it can send it back to the computer, so IDE mode results a max of 30-70 MB/s read/writes. With NCQ enabled, if the computer makes multiple simultaneous small file requests (queue depth of 2 or more), it can usually hit 200-300 MB/s.

So yeah, figure out a way to get that SATA connector card to operate in AHCI mode. My guess would be that it's always in AHCI mode.

Thanks guys!

I have Storage opened right now on Speccy but i dont see anything that says "AHCI" anywhere.

I dont know if this means anything but under "ATA Standard", i see "ACS2". Under "Interface", i see SATA.

Where should i be looking?
