I get this error with and without a cd inside... I am unable to open my drive as well. Driver is installed. I am using a usb to sata to connect it. There is the sata on one end, and two usb inputs on the other end. There is also a light on the dvd drive.

I thought that that 'Insert disc' message was on my PC!
Well then, open up a paper clip and put it in the small pin-sized hole in the ODD drive front until it pops and opens the drive. Put a runable disc in it and see if it runs.
WORKS: Congratulations!
DOESN'T WORK: There's nothing more I can do. Sorry.

That adapter is for laptop drives that only use 5v. THe drive is a desktop drive that requires 12v. This combo will never work. The drive requires a voltage the adapter will never supply. Look at the label on the drive, it will list the voltages and amperages required. I can almost guarantee it will list at least 0.5A on the 12v line.
