Hey folks,

My daughter wants a gaming computer. She's leaning toward alienware; I think they're overpriced for what you get. I might be wrong. What do I know, I'm just a parent ;)

I don't have an infinite budget, and this is what I came up with:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($285.98 @ DirectCanada)
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 EXTREME6 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($198.98 @ Newegg Canada)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2133 Memory ($69.43 @ DirectCanada)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($59.95 @ Vuugo)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Superclocked Video Card ($159.99 @ Memory Express)
Case: Cougar Challenger-O (Black/Orange) ATX Mid Tower Case ($119.78 @ Amazon Canada)
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($119.99 @ NCIX)
Optical Drive: LG UH12NS30 Blu-Ray Reader, DVD/CD Writer ($56.21 @ DirectCanada)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 OEM (64-bit) ($109.99 @ NCIX)
Wireless Network Adapter: TP-Link TL-WDN4800 802.11a/b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter ($38.98 @ DirectCanada)
Total: $1219.28

I'm pretty new to this...does this seem like a decent first gaming system? Should I swap anything out? Is anything overkill (ie could be done a little cheaper?) - or - did I cheap out on anything I shouldn't have?

Solution
I'm gonna just go down the list and say my opinion on each part:

CPU: Good choice.
MoBo: Overkill for the budget, go with something under $150. Asus Z97-A?
Memory: Good choice.
Storage: Good choice.
Video Card: This is the main component of a gaming PC. A thousand dollar machine would be much better suited with a much more powerful graphics card. GTX 970?
Case: Never heard of this one, but it'll do. Make sure you daughter likes its looks!
Power Supply: If you are really careful about power efficiency, this one is fine. If you don't care, get 80+ bronze.
Optical Drive: Unless your daughter is gonna watch blu-ray movies, all you need is DVD, blu-ray isn't necessary.
Operating System: Good choice.
Wireless: For gaming, wired internet...

Wireless: For gaming, wired internet is always the best choice. If the router is too far, then maybe you'll want to consider a power line adapter. If not I guess your wireless card will work.

BTW, Alienware products are overpriced and IMHO never buy one. Sorry for all of you Alienware fans out there!

What I recommend. Seeing that this is your first build, I assumed you wouldn't be overclocking the CPU, as the parts I picked aren't compatible with OCing the CPU.

Also, do you know what kind of games your daughter will be playing?

She says she is looking for:

Anything on steam
Minecraft (lots and lots of minecraft)
Telltale games
The walking dead
WoW
Resident Evil
Skyrim
Runescape
Bioshock
Assassin's Creed
"every shooter game ever"

Does that help with what we need? Thank you so much for your help, I understand that our budget limits what we can do.
