"PowerColor's R9 390 PCS+ is currently available online for $340, which is $10 more than AMD's reference design pricing, a reasonable increase if you only look at the R9 390. You can find the GTX 970 online for $310, which is definitely a better option in terms of performance, power draw, and noise—pretty much everything. Don't get me wrong, this isn't PowerColor's fault as their card is good for a R9 390; it's AMD's old technology and their pricing that affects the product negatively."

the r9 390 is better card overall. its a REFRESHED version of the r9 290 with higher clock speeds and 8 gigs of vram.
i recommend the r9 390

are you nuts!!?? the r9 390 a rebadged r9 285????????
to make things clear the r9 390 is a refreshed r9 290(not r9 285). its faster than the gtx 970 being somewhat cheaper

My mistake, my eyes SAW 390 but my brain saw 380. As with the R9 2xx series vs Nvidia, it matter what resolution you'll be gaming at. Not worth the price OR the extra power consumption to me. In reality, as Geofelt said, either card is pretty comparable aside from power consumption. I haven't seen any concusive benchmarks that show the extra 4GB makes any difference for the majority of titles, regardless of resolution.

wow, that is insane. I thought they would be much more comparable after watching this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udXCusTnRsY

^^^You didn't read my next post. I mistakenly though you had said R9 380, not 390. Still, the performance is comparable plus the 390 needs a much larger power supply and driver support isn't nearly as good on almost all game titles. With the 390 there will be a lot of in game features that require disabling versus the 970 that supports the Gameworks features and a few others. It IS still a rebadged unit though. Again, the 290x, 390 and 970 pretty much trade places depending on title and resolution.

Thanks for all the quick feedback guys. As I have a 500 watt power supply, and the cooling on my computer is not the best, I feel that sticking with the 970 would be a better option. The extra 4 gigs of vram would not apply to my use as I only use dual 1080ps. Thanks so much guys!
