Hi, im a first time builder and just got all of my parts but I have been reading up about ESD and how it can fry your parts and it has made me pretty nervous to start building my PC. I have done some research throughout the forums and just online in general for ways to avoid it and to ground myself but a problem I have run into is that both my case and my PSU are fully painted along with all the screws. My current plan is to before I start completely is to touch my kitchen faucet as it is metal, then install my PSU and plug it in but turn it off so I can touch it occasionally while building. Will this work even if both my case and PSU are painted? I do not have an anti static mat or wristband, but I will be building the PC on a wooden table in a room with wooden floors and I was thinking about doing it standing up and barefooted aswell to possibly help ground myself further? I could really use your guys help as I cant afford to fry an essential piece to my computer. I would really appreciate some tips/advice on how I can ground myself in this situation to make sure nothing goes wrong in the building of my first PC

i work on computers for a living. i have never lost a part due to esd. it is pretty unlikely for this to happen to you. the reason they relate it to custom pc building is because people are at home collecting static in pajamas or building their machines on carpeted floors. you will be fine in a room with wooden floors and tables. wash your hands and just wear normal clothing. touch something metal like the fridge quickly before you start and you will have nothing to worry about.

Even though it's painted, the case & PSU are still going to be conductive, so it'll be fine. As N3rdR4ge says, the main issue is people building PCs in environments that are likely to promoted static (on carpet in a sunny room whilst wearing nylon socks). In reality, if you're careful and take the precautions you've mentioned, youll be fine. (and I'd say you don't need to worry about ESD damaging your PSU when you fit it)

could you 'borrow' an unpainted case screw from another pc, just while building the new one?
if not, don't worry too much, as long as you follow the advice given in previous posts it'll be fine.
