Hi guys,

I bought my laptop MSI GE60 2PC Apache around a year ago and have been getting random BSOD quite often since the day I had bought it. Sometimes it happen quite a few times in one day or sometimes only just once in 3 - 4 days. Around 2 weeks ago I have refreshed the Windows using Windows 8 recovery tools, ran driver verifier for a few days, it showed that the bundled Norton Storage recovery was to blame, so I removed it and the laptop ran fine for around 2-3 days then I started getting random BSOD ranging from NTFS_Files_System to System Thread Exception Not Handled. Here's what I have done to this boy and some symptoms:

- Ran Windows 8 memory diagnostic tools standard test for 2 loops > No error
- Ran Memtest86+ > Pass 4 tests, got error for about 2000+
- Ran Western Digital Data Lifeguard Tools Extended Test > Said that my HDD has bad sectors, chose the repair option but it got Test Error Code: 08-Unable to repair bad sectors
- Ran sfc /scannow for a ton of times > sometimes it could repair something, sometimes said the system is fine
- Hearing scratching noise probably from the HDD from time to time > Couldn't do a thing about it.
- While browsing with Google Chrome some pages would get error and required a refresh, especially pages with lot of flash
> Fix by reloading said pages
- After using Microsoft Excel or Powerpoint for a while the programme would freeze if not promptly restart then it would BSOD > Fix by restarting before the BSOD occur.
- Also, sometimes after I resumed the laptop from sleep mode or hibernating, after inputting my password and got passed the login screen, the keyboard won't work > Fix by putting it in sleep mode again and re-login.

Could the results directly translate to RAM and HDD faulty? or is it just because of some drivers bug. I planned to replace the RAM and swap HDD for SSD, but it would be great if I don't have to. Any help is much appreciated.

My System:

MSI GE60 2 PC Apache
Windows 8.1
Intel Core i7 -4700HQ
VGA Nvidia GTX 850M
HDD WD WDC WD10JPVX-22JC3T0 1TB
RAM 8GB DDR3 1 channel

Thanks,

Minidumps

- Ran Memtest86+ > Pass 4 tests, got error for about 2000+

(I assume you mean you got a error)

update BIOS, reboot and re run memtest86+ and confirm it passes
http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GE60-2PC-Apache.html#down-bios

please note: your system also has some firmware that you will want to update also. EC and touch pad firmware. I would also run through the list of drivers and update any you think are out of date.

be sure to update the BIOS

Thanks for the reply johnbl, unfortunately the MSI recommends that I should download the same BIOS version as my current version, but my current version is E16GFIMS.00F So which version should I download? And the reason as to why I got errors from Memtest86+ could stem from my BIOS, right ?

The bios contains the default primary and secondary timings used to initialize the computers electronics for the memory.
It is very common for a old BIOS not to provide the correct timings. It is always best to update the BIOS and retest. If you get a failure you have to lookup the timing specs of the actual memory SIMMs you are using and manually enter them into the BIOS. Some BIOS versions only expose the primary timings and don't provide access to the secondary timings.
It is pretty common that memory will require changing one of the secondary timings from 1N or 1T to 2n or 2t for command setup. Otherwise if the memory fails with correct settings then you would replace the memory.

The memory dump will show info on the actual memory cards installed in the machine. I will take a quick look and see.

ok: memory was kingston running at 1600Mhz (8GB) SODIMM

part number: MSI16D3LS1KBG/8G
you should google "MSI16D3LS1KBG/8G memory timings" and try to find the memory timings and correct voltages for the BIOS. It looks like a MSI serial number so I would expect the MSI board to already have the correct timings.
