The title says it all!
I don't mind the heat and power consumption if the 390x is better as I can always get a different psu.
The 390x in question is the Asus Strix and the GTX 970 is the msi twin frozr!

I'm not sure which country you're in but the 390x is more in the GTX 980's price range in England. The GTX 980 gives more performance in most games at 1080/1440/4k, it has less VRAM though, what resolution are you running? Either the 390x or 970 would do well as they are pretty much equal in performance if you're running a 1080p monitor,

umm im pretty sure 390X beats 980 in 4k res... plz dont inform people the wrong info Sergeant-Sneaky...
well op... i would suggest you get the 390X... its a great price.. and edges out both 970 and 980..
just remember you wont be able to overclock much, which the nVIDIA cards can do EXTREMELY well and the 390X is a Triple thick card..
but if you overclock the 980 will easily be your best option.. however for just 1080p get the gtx 970 and save yourself some money... you can always SLI if you desire more power...

Most high end graphic cards are more than 2 slots width now. You really have to dig around to find any that are only 2 slots wide.

That might change next year when all the top end video cards will be using 16nm fab tech for the GPU's with HBM v2 and probably most will be water cooled. Big, Big changes coming...

also i feel the need to add that of all the benchmarks on the web show that @ 1080p the 980 wins... @ 1440p its a tie and @ 4K the 390X wins...
very curious as to why toms guide is the only one (i could find atm) with 980 dominance? Hmmm....??
