I can't get my head around this topic and need to ask the experts in this community.
I've got a HTPC and a receiver (5.1 surround).
In this HTPC I've got a graphics card (ATI Radeon HD5700 series) and this is connected to the receiver by HDMI.
Everything works - however I've been thinking that a sound card might improve the sound?!
Lets say that it does improve the sound quality;
You've got the HDAV (Xonar HDAV1.3) type which connects through HDMI. Should this be applied - wouldn't that go on the expence of the video quality (connecting the receiver by HDMI to the HTPC through the graphic card)?
The graphics cards usually support 7.1 surround, so would there be any benefit installing a sound card when the receiver has to do the DAC (digital/analog conversion) job?
You've also got the other type - S/PDIF connection type. Would it be better to send video through the HDMI (via the graphics card) and sound through the soundcard to the receiver by S/PDIF? Is this even possible, splitting sound and picture? Would it require alot of tuning from either the receiver's- or the HTPC's end, to sync sound and video when playing a downloaded movie for example?
I've read outlw6669's replies to a previous post however - my dilemma wasn't specifically touched upon and I saw myself in need for asking the question
