Whenever computer goes into sleep mode it gets stuck

Originally my uncle dropped off his tower cause it would display no image and say it was in power saving mode. After inspection I noticed the first two dimms were dislodged, I fixed this, the computer then displayed the proper images and had a post beep.

Now once on the desktop, I assumed it was fixed, and left it alone for a moment while I did something else. The tower which was set to sleep every 10min untouched, did just that. After it went into sleep mode I could not bring it back. Not ctrl alt delete, pressing the power button(which is flashing normal color while in sleep mode) turns it off entirely.

The computer is still running, I hear and see the fans operating. If I turn it off, and reboot, it goes to windows normally. I have set it to never go in sleep mode, but I'd hate if that were the end all solution. Any ideas?

Solution
On sleep mode computers are apparently off, making no sounds, and leds are off. So, if you can hear the fans running, see leds turned on, etc. the computer is running normally.. it must be the monitor staying in sleep mode. Shut it down a few seconds before turing it on again.. if necessary remove the power cable for a few seconds.

If it keeps doing it, it may be a BIOS setting (the update may do it), possibly corrupted drivers particularly Chipset and Video, in this thread someone mentions a Windows Update that may fix it.

Without having the make, model, mobo, BIOS version etc. it's hard to say but I do remember some time ago seeing a rash of similar problems. If I remember correctly, it was something to do with an incompatibility/bug between the OS and the BIOS that was corrected by updating the BIOS with a new version.

By far you have already done the easier work around. You might look into the BIOS issue for that specific machine and try to find a newer version of the BIOS.
