I am wanting to create a computer that will be able to both do gaming and SolidWorks. I know that a gaming card will not work well with solid works and a card that can do the necessary rendering for a SolidWorks will not do well with gaming.
With that said is it possible hook the two graphics cards up in such a way that would allow you to switch between them.

Solution

Agreed with Firepower, get the drivers and then when you reboot you have to choose the graphics output in the bios, and this will determine which gpu's processing power is used.

Yes, you can. Just put them both in the system and get the drivers for both. When you want to use the gaming card, plug the monitor into that GPU and reboot. If you want to use the SolidWorks card, the same is true.

Actually a similar quadro or firepro will perform equally to their Geforce or Radeon variant.
Although their drivers may be different and the workstations will not get the game tweaks in their drivers, based on raw performance, a GTX 780Ti will perform identically if not a little better than the K5000 Quadro.

I think it may be more complicated than that. Some applications may only run on specific cards, and the card he has just is terrible for gaming
