no audio output device is installed

for nearly 2 weeks my computer has had no sound when speakers or headphones are plugged in the speaker icon in the bottom right has an "X" through it and just says no audio output device is installed going into the playback it very clearly says speakers/headphones
realtek high def audio its the default device and has a big green tick by it but still no sound ive tried uninstalling it reinstalling it downloading drivers updating drivers and just nothing everything i try just fails please help

On Playback Devices(right-click on audio icon) when there's sound playing(if so) do you see a stack of bars next to your default sound device going up and down? If so, you do have sound working, if not there's no sound device working.

If there is sound playing at least when you don't have speakers or headphones plugged into your green sound jack behind your pc, then maybe the problem is the green jack itself, it may have a bad contact issue or it's simply broken somehow, if it's the case you have two options, try plugging into the black jack and then changing you default sound device or worst case scenario, get another motherboard.

there is no bars next to the speaker icon and the jack works perfectly in other devices

The bars are supposed to be next to your default sound device icon in the 'Playback' tab when you click on 'Playback devices' after right-clicking on the speaker icon on the bottom right of your screen/taskbar. If there is movement on that bar then there's sound.

Have you tried reinstalling Windows? This time don't let it update and see if the problem continues.
