Should i buy GTX 980 or GTX 780ti ?

Solution
GTX970 or GTX980Ti, is what I would be looking at the GTX980 is only 10-15% more powerful than the 970 at much higher cost.
But between those two the GTX980.

Well the 780ti sits in between the GTX 970 and GTX 980 in terms of performance, so it depends on the cost. If its quite a bit cheaper than the 980 it could be a good deal, although the 780ti uses quite a bit more power so make sure your psu is up to it.

As a 780 user I would not buy one today, the 3gb VRAM is already a limiting factor in a few games at 1080p and that trend will only grow. Seeing as the 780Ti is also 3gb I would instantly rule that out too.

As said earlier the question should be 970 or 980Ti

Okay people, keep in mind the 290X now beats the 780TI, so if you're going to say the 780TI sits between the 970 and 980, you are then saying the 290X also beats the 970.

OP: Nvidia doesn't put much effort into providing driver performance for their older architecture cards, so i wouldn't consider the 780 TI. Look at the R9 290/R9 290X/GTX 970/R9 390/GTX 980/R9 Fury/R9 Fury X/GTX 980 TI. That is the list of high end cards from weaker to stronger.

Excluded the R9 390X and GTX Titan from the list for stupid price/performance ratio.

R9 295x2 is currently the best value however it's a dual GPU card so should be considered separately.

Besides the driver being a issue with the 780ti, the 290x is overclocked from the factory and the 780ti is not.
I have a 780ti super, super clocked(evga super clocked model that was even further overclocked) and trust me there is NO 290x that will beat it.
But of the choices i would go 980, the 970 is a great card but only really has 3.5g vram
and i have seen new 980's sell for $475 new so for the money difference the 980 is the best card.

@sizzling, in defence of AMD, usually new games work fine on existing drivers in my experience, with worst case being the requirement to disable a feature or tweak a setting via catalyst (e.g. the tessalation issue with hair works in the witcher 3).

The fact gcn has been around since 2012 means the drivers are pretty stable, I've heard more issues from nvidia users about new bugs being introduced and having to roll back drivers for certain game / card combos, which is likely due to relative newness of the Maxwell architecture..

The point is I'm not sure the 'nvidia better at drivers' argument is all that valid these days, and I say this having recently moved from a Fermi based GTX 560 to an r9 280 gpu. Both have their quirks for sure, but to be fair both vendors drivers usually work fine for the most part.

I don't upgrade my nvidia drivers unless i have to, it causes problems too often.

AMD drivers i don't even bother to uninstall before updating to newest version, they never give me problems.

That people still think that nvidia drivers are "better" always makes me roll my eyes.
